What this calculator does
A weighted average gives some values more influence than others. It is useful for grades, stock costs, survey results, blended rates and any calculation where each value does not count equally.
Formula used
Each value is multiplied by its weight. Those weighted values are added together, then divided by the total weight.
How to read the result
The weights only need to be on a consistent basis. They can be credits, units, percentages or hours, as long as larger weights mean larger influence.
Assumptions
- Ignores rows with zero weight.
- Weights must be positive.
- Does not require weights to add to 100.
Sources and checks
This calculator uses a standard public formula. Where rules or thresholds can change, source links are listed on the relevant page.
Frequently asked questions
Do weights need to add to 100?
No. The calculator divides by the total weight, so weights can be credits, counts or any consistent positive numbers.
