What this calculator does

This tile calculator estimates the number of tiles needed for a rectangular floor or wall. It includes a waste allowance for cuts, breakage and pattern matching.

Formula used

Area is divided by tile area to get the base tile count. The waste percentage is then added and the final number is rounded up.

How to read the result

Tile layout can change waste significantly. Herringbone, diagonal layouts and awkward rooms usually need a larger allowance than simple straight runs.

Assumptions

  • Assumes a rectangular area.
  • Uses tile dimensions in millimetres.
  • Does not account for grout gap size or boxed quantity.

This calculator uses a standard public formula. Where rules or thresholds can change, source links are listed on the relevant page.

Frequently asked questions

What waste allowance should I use?

A simple layout often uses around 10%. Complex patterns, diagonal layouts and small rooms with many cuts may need more.
