What this calculator does
Use this flooring calculator to estimate how many packs are needed for laminate, engineered wood, vinyl or similar packaged flooring.
Formula used
Floor area equals length multiplied by width, plus any extra area. The waste allowance is added, then the adjusted area is divided by pack coverage and rounded up.
How to read the result
Room shape, laying direction, pattern, thresholds and mistakes can change waste. Check pack coverage carefully because different products cover different areas.
Assumptions
- Assumes a rectangular main area.
- Rounds up to whole packs.
- Does not model stair treads, pattern matching or supplier batch availability.
Sources and checks
This calculator uses a standard public formula. Where rules or thresholds can change, source links are listed on the relevant page.
Frequently asked questions
What waste allowance should I use for flooring?
Straight layouts often use around 10%. Diagonal layouts, awkward rooms and patterned flooring can need more.
