What this calculator does

This calculator estimates body fat percentage from tape measurements. It is convenient, but it is still an estimate and can be affected by measuring technique.

Formula used

The calculator uses the US Navy circumference equations, converting centimetres to inches before applying the formula.

How to read the result

Use the result as a tracking estimate rather than a diagnosis. DEXA, Bod Pod and professional assessments can give more controlled measurements.

Assumptions

  • Uses height, neck and waist for men.
  • Uses height, neck, waist and hips for women.
  • Not suitable for medical diagnosis.

Sources and checks

This calculator uses a standard public formula. Where rules or thresholds can change, source links are listed on the relevant page.

Frequently asked questions

How can I make the estimate more consistent?

Measure at the same time of day, use the same tape position and avoid pulling the tape tight enough to compress the skin.
